Make Your Best First Impression at the Front Door

Updated: May 4, 2020

One of the easiest and least expensive ways to boost your home’s curb appeal and impress home buyers is to start right at your front door.

Front Steps.

Before you look up, take a look down! If those steps are cement, you have two basic options, paint or replace with bluestone.

You might be surprised how affordable a new stone stoop will cost. Always make sure you sweep and powerwash to keep it clean and mildew-free.

Welcome mats. Welcome mats are great for instantly creating an inviting atmosphere. To highlight your personality, go beyond the generic mats that simply say “Welcome” and choose something that inspires or represents you. If you’re unable to find a mat that encapsulates your personality, consider having it customized.

House numbers. While considered a functional part of the house, house numbers can lend a hand in the style category as well. There is a wide selection of house numbers varying in font, style, and color, and the right combination will surely add another level of personalization to your front door. Try Etsy for some terrific hand made metal options.

Planters. It's always a lovely idea to place a planter or two outside your front door. You can be creative with urn styles and flower/plant varieties.

Two simple planters placed on either side of your door create an effortless and understated design that can also be striking and sophisticated. Also, consider varying the plants according to the season to have the area around your front door match the greenery in your yard.

Furniture. If you have space around your front door or porch, consider adding a few pieces of outdoor furniture. Nothing’s more inviting than a few chairs placed right outside of your doorway. Adirondack chairs placed right on your front lawn gives others the impression of a welcoming home full of relaxation and friendly conversation.

Lighting. A dark doorstep isn’t appealing, but one lit with well-placed lights is very welcoming. In the daytime, your light fixtures can serve as additional decoration, but after the sun sets, they will illuminate the area around your front door and light the way for your guests.

The Front door

Giving your front door a fresh paint color will quickly change the look and feel of your house. With so many options to choose from, you can be a traditionalist with black, gray or white colors, or make a striking statement with navy, robin's egg blue or red.

Wood stained doors and hardware

A striking wood stained door can make a rich statement. Replacing a basic door with one that has been hand carved can dramatically change the appearance of your home. Also, don't neglect the hardware. Updated hardware in oil rubbed bronze or polished nickel are popular choices right now.

Seasonal Changes

A great way to make a good first impression is to match your front decor to the season. One suggestion though: Stay away from fake floral wreaths...a bit outdated for these stylish times.

The Entry Way

Now that you have tackled the exterior, don't forget the SECOND impression is once the front door open to inside! Make sure it is light, bright and free from shoes, bags and all unnecessary clutter.

By following a few of these steps, buyers and visitors will marvel at the inviting appearance of your front entry design. Best of all, they'll immediately want to step right inside to see MORE!
